Tastes of the World, Voices that Inspire: Stranger at Home

  • Hale Fellowship Hall, Hingham Congregational Church 66 Main Street Hingham, MA, 02043 United States (map)

Join the Hingham Unity Council for a special evening featuring a screening of the award-winning PBS documentary Stranger at Home: Healing the Psychological Wounds of War, followed by a live talkback discussion with the film’s creators and participants.

This event is part of the “Tastes of the World, Voices that Inspire” dinner and speaker series, which brings the community together around meaningful conversations and shared experiences.

The documentary explores the psychological challenges many veterans face when returning from combat and highlights innovative approaches to healing and reintegration into civilian life. Through the stories of military service members—including a Navy psychologist turned whistleblower, an Army Ranger involved in a highly publicized friendly-fire incident, and a Vietnam veteran who became a trauma expert—the film presents a powerful blueprint for addressing the mental health impacts of war.

Following the screening, attendees will participate in a live talkback discussion featuring:

  • Beth Dolan, lead producer, co-director, and co-writer of Stranger at Home

  • Dr. Mark Russell, retired U.S. Navy Commander, psychologist, and cast member in the film

The conversation will explore themes of trauma, resilience, and the urgent need for improved support for veterans and their families.

Evening Schedule

  • 6:30 PM – Dinner buffet begins

  • 7:15 PM – Film screening

  • After the film – Talkback discussion with the filmmakers and guest speakers

Dinner will be provided by Rhythm Knight Catering, a veteran-owned business. Guests are welcome to bring their own beverages (BYOB).
