Hull No Place for Hate Stand in the Sand

Hull’s No Place for Hate Town Committee would like to extend an invitation to you for our Take a Stand in the Sand event on May 5, 2024. The stand will take place between 2:45 PM and 3:45 PM and gather at the Bernie King Pavilion.

At its core, our event is about bringing the Hull and South Shore communities together. It’s a reminder of our shared values and our commitment to being an open and welcoming community for all, whether residents or visitors.

After reintroducing this activity in October 2022 and getting the positive response we did, we thought it should become a more regular event. We will be spelling out the words We Stand Together on Nantasket Beach, and we’ve lined up photographers to take a group picture. Parking is free, and an ASL interpreter will be on site.

Music and fun for everyone!

The banner on our Facebook page shows you the end result of our first Take a Stand in the Sand in 2022: https://www.facebook.com/HullNPFH. Many volunteers made this display possible, and we would like to have your participation. We need volunteers and your body on the beach – bring a friend, bring a neighbor, bring your team!

Could we count on you to participate? If so, could you please fill out this form:

Hull No Place For Hate Feast of Conversations

Dear friends and neighbors - can we talk?

Sometimes it's not so easy. At our 2024 Feast of Conversations, pick up skills to make those conversations less stressful and more fruitful. We'll hear from experts and then practice in small groups, starting with an "appetizer" topic bound to get laughs as well as strong opinions. Then we'll tackle tougher topics that you might encounter in your daily life.

RSVP to help us plan: https://bit.ly/FOCRSVP2024 or email hullnoplaceforhate@gmail.com

Enter the High School Cafeteria directly by its side door (look for our balloons). Settle in with refreshments in the cafeteria, and let's talk!

Our guest speakers will offer insights on ways to prevent the pitfalls that can undermine our conversations. and provide us with tools for appreciating each other’s viewpoints even if we disagree. By working together, we can strengthen the fabric of our community.

Many thanks to co-sponsors the Hull Nantasket Chamber of CommerceWellspring Multi-Service Center, the Hull Lifesaving Museum, and Hull Pride.

Listening to America: A conversation with author Ryan Bernsten

The Town Committee Hull No Place for Hate invites our community to a Zoom presentation and conversation with author Ryan Bernsten on October 25. His book, 50 States of Mind: A Journey to Rediscover American Democracy, is a work of travel nonfiction modeled after *Alexis de Tocqueville‘s extensive American travels and interviews.

Bernsten’s 23,000-mile journey through all 50 states explores the complexities of today's America by talking with its citizens. With a grant in his pocket and writing and theater skills in his background, Bernsten set out to better understand his country and write about his experiences.

Leading with the desire to listen and overcome our preconceived notions, 50 States of Mind asks how we can bring humanity back into our political conversations to keep our democracy strong. Bernsten’s project is heartfelt and compelling as he seeks an answer to the question, “Is America as divided as it seems?”

Questions will be welcome from participants.

RSVP to get personal link: https://bit.ly/hullnpfh-listeningtoamerica

*Alexis de Tocqueville was a French diplomat, philosopher, and social scientist who wrote Democracy in America in 1835 after traveling extensively around the US. His observations of America’s politics, economy, culture, and democracy remain important and prophetic today.

Scituate LIT Conversation: Food Insecurty

The Scituate Town Library and STRIDE invite you to a LIT Conversation.
February 7 | 6 - 7:30 PM | Scituate Town Library Community Room

The Scituate Town Library and Scituate Together for Representation, Inclusion, Diversity & Equity (STRIDE), invite you to a LIT Conversation, featuring Jamele Adams as facilitator. LIT means Love, Inclusion, and Trust. Our next conversation will explore the topic of food insecurity in our community and we will be joined by Jim Pollard, Director of Outreach at the Scituate Food Pantry. You will find resources available on this topic at the Scituate Town Library website (www.bit.ly/LITScituate).

This community conversation will be held in person on February 7th from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Scituate Town Library.

Our conversation agreement is as follows:

-Be curious and listen actively to understand how others' experiences have shaped their perspectives.
-Show respect by suspending judgment; setting aside judgment opens you up to learning from others.
-Note common ground as well as differences. Seek to understand, rather than to persuade. Question your own assumptions and look for new insights.
-Be your authentic self; speak from your own experiences and with sincerity.
-Be purposeful and concise, so that others have time to share.
-Be conscious of your use of body language and nonverbal responses.

"Freedom Riders" Movie Screening

"Freedom Riders" Movie Screening

Please attend this documentary screening hosted by Abington ASPIRE!

“Freedom Riders” is the powerful harrowing and ultimately inspirational story of six months in 1961 that changed America forever. From May until November 1961, more than 400 black and white Americans risked their lives—and many endured savage beatings and imprisonment—for simply traveling together on buses and trains as they journeyed through the Deep South. Deliberately violating Jim Crow laws in order to test and challenge a segregated interstate travel system, the Freedom Riders met with bitter racism and mob violence along the way, sorely testing their belief in nonviolent activism.

From award-winning filmmaker Stanley Nelson (Wounded Knee, Jonestown: The Life and Death of Peoples Temple, The Murder of Emmett Till) Freedom Riders features testimony from a fascinating cast of central characters: the Riders themselves, state and federal government officials, and journalists who witnessed the Rides firsthand. The two-hour documentary is based on Raymond Arsenault's book Freedom Riders: 1961 and the Struggle for Racial Justice.
