Join us to watch and discuss this powerful documentary about the increasingly anti-trans tenor of mainstream media and the role it plays in anti-trans healthcare legislation.
HEIGHTENED SCRUTINY follows Chase Strangio, ACLU attorney and the first out trans person to argue before the Supreme Court, as he fights a high-stakes legal battle to overturn Tennessee’s ban on gender-affirming care for transgender youth (United States v. Skrmetti).
The film exposes the dangerous role of mainstream media in fueling anti-trans legislation, uncovering how biased coverage drives hate, endangers lives, and threatens democracy itself. With insights from journalists like Jelani Cobb, Lydia Polgreen, and Gina Chua, and activists like Laverne Cox, the story dismantles anti-trans disinformation and highlights its devastating real-world impact.
With the dangerous SCOTUS decision upholding the ban on life-saving healthcare, HEIGHTENED SCRUTINY is an urgent call to action against bigotry and injustice.
Join the Hingham Unity Council for a special evening featuring a screening of the award-winning PBS documentary Stranger at Home: Healing the Psychological Wounds of War, followed by a live talkback discussion with the film’s creators and participants.
This event is part of the “Tastes of the World, Voices that Inspire” dinner and speaker series, which brings the community together around meaningful conversations and shared experiences.
The documentary explores the psychological challenges many veterans face when returning from combat and highlights innovative approaches to healing and reintegration into civilian life. Through the stories of military service members—including a Navy psychologist turned whistleblower, an Army Ranger involved in a highly publicized friendly-fire incident, and a Vietnam veteran who became a trauma expert—the film presents a powerful blueprint for addressing the mental health impacts of war.
Following the screening, attendees will participate in a live talkback discussion featuring:
Beth Dolan, lead producer, co-director, and co-writer of Stranger at Home
Dr. Mark Russell, retired U.S. Navy Commander, psychologist, and cast member in the film
The conversation will explore themes of trauma, resilience, and the urgent need for improved support for veterans and their families.
6:30 PM – Dinner buffet begins
7:15 PM – Film screening
After the film – Talkback discussion with the filmmakers and guest speakers
Dinner will be provided by Rhythm Knight Catering, a veteran-owned business. Guests are welcome to bring their own beverages (BYOB).
Purchase here. Tickets are limited and previous events in this series have sold out quickly. A limited number of complimentary tickets are available for veterans and individuals for whom the ticket price is not accessible. Please contact info@hinghamunity.org for more information.
Community members and local businesses interested in event sponsorship opportunities are also encouraged to reach out.
